No. The CDC lists "writes some letters in her name" as a milestone for five, not four, and no kindergarten I know of asks for more. A four-year-old who cannot write their name yet is on schedule. What the research does tie to a good first year of school is quieter: whether a child can look at a shape and copy it. That is a different skill from producing letters, and it is the one worth the year.
The names-and-ages part is solid. What to do with the year instead is half evidence, half judgement, and I will mark which is which.
My 4-year-old can't write his name
Then your four-year-old is in the majority, and nothing needs fixing.
The CDC's milestone checklists are the most conservative checklist there is: a milestone appears at the age by which most children, 75 percent or more, can do it. "Writes some letters in her name" sits on the five-year list. Some of the letters, not the whole name. The four-year list has no writing on it at all. What it does have is "holds crayon or pencil between fingers and thumb (not a fist)" and "draws a person with three or more body parts". A stick figure with a head and two legs clears it.
The things worth a word with your pediatrician are different: a grip that is still a fist at four, a four-year-old who cannot copy a circle, or a hand that avoids drawing altogether. Those are about the hand.
What actually predicts a good kindergarten year
The best study we found is Cameron and colleagues, 2012, in Child Development. They followed 213 children, tested at home before they started kindergarten and again once they were in it. One of the things measured before school was a task called design copy: the child looks at a shape on a card and draws it. Not a letter. A shape.
Design copy predicted how the children scored on kindergarten reading and math tests, over and above their executive function, the ability to hold an instruction in mind and stay with a task. The authors note that design copy "is highly related to handwriting", which is the mechanism you would expect. A hand that can reproduce a square can learn to reproduce an E. A larger paper by Grissmer and colleagues in 2010, across several big datasets, found the same broad thing: fine motor skill at school entry predicts later reading and math, and had been overlooked next to letters and numbers.
Now the limit, in the authors' own words: "This study does not address causality or underlying mechanisms." Children who copy shapes well go on to do well, and nobody knows which way the arrow points. It may run the other way, with school building the hand. Taken at face value, the two studies say the useful pre-kindergarten practice is drawing and copying shapes, which is pencil work. Neither study tested a toy, a threading board or a pair of tongs, and I will not claim they did.

A readiness check you can run at the kitchen table
Since shape copying is the strongest of the hand tasks, the check is shape copying. Draw a shape, hand over the pencil, ask for the same one. Do not show the strokes; the task is looking and reproducing.
The ages below are averages from the Beery test of visual-motor integration, the one occupational therapists use. Averages mean half of typical children are later, and a few months either way means nothing.
- A vertical line, then a circle, at roughly two and three. If a four-year-old cannot copy a circle, that is the one item here worth mentioning to the pediatrician.
- A cross, two lines meeting in the middle, at about four. This is the first shape that asks the hand to change direction on purpose.
- A square at about four and a half. Corners are hard. A square with rounded corners at four is fine.
- A diagonal line, also around four and a half. Plenty of children who manage the square still cannot manage the slant.
- A triangle at around five. Three slants, three corners. Most children are writing some letters before the triangle comes right.
Watch the hand rather than the drawing: does it plan the stroke or dive at the paper, and is the pencil in fingers or a fist?
This preparation, so remote and indirect, is a preparation of the hand to write; it is not a preparation of writing; the two preparations must not be confused with each other.

What to do with the year instead
Drawing has the studies behind it. Hand work does not, and this is where I need to say that we sell hand-work toys, so weigh that half accordingly.
Drawing and copying shapes is the evidenced one. Ten minutes at a table with a pencil, a crayon or a stick of chalk, copying whatever you draw and then drawing whatever they like. Shapes, faces, roads, monsters. Letters can come into it if the child asks.
The second kind builds the hand that will hold the pencil. The studies above did not measure it, and I know of no study showing a threading toy raises a reading score. It is reasonable practice all the same, and four-year-olds like it, which counts for a lot. Most of it lives on the practical life shelf; the rest is on the fine motor shelf.
- Tongs. Moving beans between two bowls with wooden tongs works the same three fingers that hold a pencil.
- Threading is the one I would start with. Big beads on a lace, slow, and slow is the point: one hand holds, the other steers.
- A row of jars with the lids off. Screwing them back on is wrist rotation, and a job with an obvious end.
- Cutting. Child scissors and a strip of paper to snip into confetti. The open-and-squeeze is the hardest thing here for most four-year-olds.
- Pouring. Water between two small jugs at the sink. Both hands doing different jobs.
If four things are out on the shelf, make one a drawing thing and one a hand thing. The 4-5 year olds shelf shows that mix, and for a child who is only just three the 3 year olds shelf runs a year simpler.
What about all 26 letters?
Writing letters and knowing letters are two skills, and the second matters more at this age. The five-year CDC list puts "names some letters when you point to them" next to "writes some letters in her name": some, at five, for both. A four-year-old who can find the first letter of their name on a cereal box, and knows the sound it makes, is doing the part that feeds into reading. Forming the letter is a hand skill and arrives with the hand.
If you want to do letters, do them as things to see and hold rather than trace. Letters to feel, letters to sort by shape, the letters of their name on the fridge in a new order each morning. That is the idea behind our language and literacy shelf, and why there are no tracing sheets on it.
Capitals first, and only the ones in their name. Lowercase letters need loops and slants, and the slant alone is a four-and-a-half-year skill on the Beery ladder.

If they want to write it anyway
Some four-year-olds want to. They see their name on a coat peg and want to make it. Let them, and keep it to what they asked for.
- Write it once, large, in capitals, and let them copy underneath. Copying is the skill, so this is on the right side of the evidence.
- Stop when they stop. Two letters and a scribble is a session. Asking for the third letter turns it into a lesson, and lessons at four end early.
- Leave the grip alone mid-stroke. Hand it over the right way and say nothing after. A fist at four is the one grip item on the CDC four-year list, so mention it; a clumsy fingers-and-thumb grip is not.
- Skip the dotted letters. My view, not a finding: tracing asks the hand to follow, the opposite of the look-and-reproduce skill that predicted anything.
Copying shapes, and the hand work that gets a child ready to copy shapes, are the two things worth the year. The name arrives on its own, usually in the first months of school, in capitals, one of them backwards. A teacher sees a room full of those every September. Yours will be one of them, and it will be fine.
