Ones with a single obvious job that a child can start without a demonstration. At this age that usually means something to post pieces into, something that makes a sound when it is hit, and something to pull out and put back.
Something the child can start in the first ten seconds, in front of an audience. A xylophone or a rainmaker works because there is nothing to explain. Keep the wrapping simple; at one, the paper is genuinely part of the gift.
They suit the age, because a Montessori toy does one thing and shows its own result. A piece fits or it does not, so a one-year-old gets an answer without waiting for yours. The label on the box matters less than that.
