At three years of age, the child has already laid the foundations of the human personality and needs the special help of education in the school.
Montessori drew her line at three. Before it, she thought, a child absorbs the world without meaning to. After it, the same child begins working at things on purpose — choosing a task, repeating it, minding whether it came out right. It is a fair description of what changes in the year a toddler becomes a preschooler.
One piece of research fits the age unusually well. Writing in Developmental Psychology in 2012, Levine, Ratliff, Huttenlocher and Cannon reported on 53 child-parent pairs video-recorded at home for 90 minutes every four months between 26 and 46 months. The children observed playing with puzzles did better on a shape-rotation task at 54 months than the children who were not, after the researchers controlled for parents' income, education and how much language the children heard.
What the study does not show matters just as much. It watched families rather than handing out toys, so it cannot establish that puzzles caused the difference — the authors say so themselves and called for further work to settle it. It compares puzzle play with no puzzle play, not one brand or one material against another.

None of it costs anything. It is mostly about where a toy sits and when you step in.
Fewer out at once
Keep six or eight things on the shelf and box the rest. A three-year-old who scans a full shelf often settles on nothing. Swap a few every couple of weeks and the old ones come back interesting.
Let the mistake stand
When a piece will not fit, wait. Many children will try the next hole on their own if you give them a moment. Fixing it for them ends the work early.
One tray, one job
Give each activity its own tray or basket with everything it needs inside. Carrying it to the table and back is part of the activity, and it makes tidying up obvious rather than negotiable.
Sit close, say little
Small parts need an adult in the room at this age. Being present is not the same as directing — you can watch from the next chair and speak only when you are asked.

When to skip a toy at three
Some of what we sell is wrong for a particular three-year-old, and it is cheaper for everyone if the page says so.

It varies a great deal, and short stretches are normal at three. Concentration tends to last longer on something the child chose, and it grows over months rather than days.
